Game Play

Q. How many teams are playing at the World Cup?
A. The World Cup will consist of two divisions, Division 1 and Division 2. D1 will consist of the top 60 teams from around the world, each of whom qualified at their respective regional championship tournaments. D2 will consist of 20 additional teams selected via the process described below.
Q. How does D2 registration work?
A. As per a vote of IQA official member teams, registration for Division 2 will be conducted on a first-come, first-serve basis, and will be open to all official member teams who will not be participating in D1. Teams will be able to register via a Google form accessible via the IQA website at 12:00AM EST on Monday, March 11th. In order to treat teams equitably regardless of the speed of their Internet connection, all teams that fill out the form between 12:00AM and 12:15AM EST will be entered into a random draw for registration. The IQA will randomly pick the D2 teams from those that have filled out the form by that time, and will notify all teams of the status of their request no later than 11:59PM on Tuesday, March 12th. Due to the timing of the D2 registration process, the IQA asks that teams only request to participate in D2 if they fully intend to travel to Kissimmee for the World Cup, if chosen. Teams will be expected to pay their $25/player tournament registration fee within one week of being selected for D2. Q. How does pool play work?
A. Each pool/grouping will consist of five teams, for a total of 12 pools in D1 and four pools in D2. Each team will play the other four teams within their pool one time.
Q.How are teams split into pools?
A. The IQA game play department will use a program to randomly assign teams to pools based on their official ranking. In D1, the top 12 ranked teams will each be randomly placed in different pools; then the next 12 ranked teams will each be randomly placed in different pools, and so on. Ultimately, each pool will have one team each ranked in each of the top 1-12, 13-24, 25-36, 37-48, and 49-60 teams attending. Pools will be set via this method over the weekend of March 23rd-24th, using the most current version of the IQA standings.
Q.How will regional diversity be represented in each pool?
A. The pool program will ensure that no more than two teams from the same region are in each pool. Depending on the regional distribution of the D2 teams, this may not be entirely possible in D2.
Q. How many games will each team play?
A. Each team will play a minimum of four games (one game against each team in their designated pool). Teams that advance to bracket play can play as many as 10 games during the Cup if they play in D1, or seven games if in D2.
Q. Who advances to bracket play?
A. In D1, 32 teams will advance to bracket play. In D2, the top 12 teams will advance to bracket play. Pool play will conclude on Saturday.
Q.How will tiebreakers work for bracketing?
A.Tiebreakers, as needed, will be first based on record, then head-to-head, then adjusted point differential (a differential > 80 will be counted as follows: 80 + sqrt(amount over 80)), then points allowed.
Q. Where will game results and standings be available?
A. Game play volunteers will be available at a tent outside the HQ building to answer all questions pertaining to game play, including game results, scheduling, and locations of medics. Updates in standings will be released periodically throughout the day. The playoff bracket will be released at the end of day one; players may remain at the park to view the bracket and their captains will also receive an email.
Q. What types of quaffles and bludgers will be used?
A. The quaffle selected by the IQA game play department will be announced in the near future. The bludgers used will be Champion dodgeballs.
Q. What is the seeker floor and what are the snitch boundaries?
A. The matches will include a ten-minute seeker floor. The snitch boundaries will include the entirety of the park, with the exception of the pond enclosed within the grounds.
Q. What is the procedure for appealing the outcome of the game?
A. The World Cup Organizing Team will have strict methods in place to ensure that players and coaches conduct themselves in a sportsmanlike manner. If a team wishes to appeal a game, the captain may fill out a formal complaint in writing at the conclusion of the game and return it to HQ. HQ will review the complaint and act accordingly.


Q. Where can I figure out when my team plays?
A. Teams will be notified via email when the game schedule becomes available. It will be posted on this website, with the field numbers for each game corresponding to the numbers on the park map. During the tournament, game schedules can be found at each field as well as the HQ tent. Team captains are also encouraged to print out a schedule or take note of their games when the schedule becomes available online.
Q. How much time is allotted for each game, and if a game starts to run over that time, what will the policy be to keep everything on schedule?
A. Each game will be allotted a 40-minute window. The staff for the next game will be on the sidelines ready to begin immediately following the conclusion of the previous game. All snitches will have watches and will be instructed to return to the field within a reasonable amount of time.
Q. Will pool play continue on day two?
A. Unlike last year, all pool play for D1 and D2 teams will be done on day one, so day two will be just brackets. This spread-out schedule will reduce delays and also prevent teams from having to play back-to-back games.
Q. Will players, refs, and snitches get any breaks this year?
A. Yes! There will be two 40-minute breaks for all teams during day one.


Q.What is the layout of the park?

Q. Will there be scoreboards on every field this year?
A. Yes. Austin-Tindall Park has large electronic scoreboards near each field. We will also have flip scoreboards in case of technical difficulties.
Q. How will scores be tracked?
A. The World Cup game play team will be using a live spreadsheet to keep track of scores and calculate rankings to use for brackets, and additional copies will be produced by hand for backup records. Field Directors will submit scores digitally and runners will hand in physical scorecards at HQ after each game is over.
Q. What kind of food will be available at the event?
A. A variety of local vendors will be on-site selling food, including healthy options, to players and spectators. Teams may also bring one cooler per team to the event with food and drink (though players are encouraged to remember that the IQA will also be providing water bottles, water, and a sports drink.) Alcohol is not permitted.
Q. Will water be available at the park?
A. Each field will have two large 10-gallon jugs near the team benches filled with water and a sports drink. The team village will have six of these jugs as well. There will also be 10 more of these jugs around the park, centralized around the medical tents. These jugs will be refilled constantly throughout the event to make sure that players stay hydrated.
Q. How will medics be set up?
A. There will be a medic or athletic trainer stationed at each field, with additional medics and ambulances at various HQ points throughout the park. See the map for more details.

Volunteering and Commentating

Q. Can I volunteer while also being a player?
A. Yes, absolutely! Some positions are only available to people who are not also playing due to the workload and necessity that those people be on call for the whole event; however, there are tons of positions open to everyone, and they will be flexible to accommodate players' game schedules. Q. Who are the announcers?
A. They're quidditch fans and improv comedians! The announcers will provide both play-by-play and comedic commentary for your entertainment. They are volunteers who have auditioned to be a part of the madness.
Q. How can I become an announcer?

Q. Do I have to have formal improv training to announce?
A. Any previous performance experience is preferred. Many of our announcers are improvisers and stand-up comedians, and some are just avid sports fans that are masters of play-by-play.
Q. Will there be entertainment during the tournament?
A. The World Cup will once again feature a variety of entertainment acts, including music. Please see the schedule page for a list of times when our larger acts will be performing. The entertainment that takes place during games will be structured so as to avoid inconveniencing teams during their matches.
